The event “EMJM FLOURISH – Resilience in Educational Contexts” on the 29th May 2025 brought together academic leaders, students, and community partners to explore the central role of resilience, emotional well-being, and self-compassion in education, especially in diverse and inclusive environments.
Opening Remarks & Programme Presentation
The session was opened by the academic coordinators of the EMJM FLOURISH programme:
– Prof. Univ. Dr. Carmel Cefai (University of Malta)
– Prof. Anastassios Matsopoulos (University of Crete)
– Prof. Celeste Simões (University of Lisbon)
– Conf. Univ. Dr. Aurora Adina Colomeischi (Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava)

They highlighted the programme’s commitment to promoting psychological resilience, inclusion, and flourishing mental health among learners and educators across Europe and partner countries. Prof Adina Colomeischi presented on the path of development of the program at USV and the impact on the local community.
Keynote Session: Flourish, Resilience, and Self-Compassion
Prof. Dr. Petruța Paraschiva Rusu delivered a thought-provoking presentation focusing on:
– The importance of self-compassion in sustaining mental health in education.
– The evidence-based links between resilience and positive educational outcomes.
– Strategies to embed these principles into teaching, counseling, and policy-making.
Living Experiences
Three current EMJM FLOURISH students shared moving personal testimonies of attending the master programme:
– Ina Vutcariov (Moldova) reflected on overcoming social and cultural challenges during her academic journey.
– Aytaj Mammadova (Azerbaijan) spoke on the role of community and peer support in navigating emotional difficulties.
– Emily Wambui (Kenya) highlighted her experience and pointed out how it impacted her work on dissertation about Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, emphasizing the importance of inclusive school environments.
Their stories emphasized the human dimension of academic resilience and the transformative impact of the FLOURISH programme.
Partnerships for Resilience in Education
In the final segment, two strategic community partners presented their work:
– Gianina Mamciuc (OLAMAID) focused on local educational initiatives that foster
resilience among marginalized groups, refugees and how she integrated the work with
EMJM students.
– Maria Araujo (FARA Foundation) shared insights on community-based models for inclusive education and youth empowerment. She was a mentor for the EMJM students.
Their interventions demonstrated the vital role of cross-sector collaboration in sustaining mental health and resilience beyond institutional settings.
Conclusion
The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the core mission of EMJM FLOURISH: to promote resilience, empathy, and well-being in educational systems worldwide. Participants left inspired to integrate these values in their academic, personal, and professional contexts.
